WCE Organisation

The Organisation

West Country Embroiderers was founded in 1973 originally with the aim of promoting and encouraging the skill of embroidery at all levels of ability. We have moved on from this and like to encompass all manner of textiles and needlecrafts.

Today we have about 800 members from an area covering Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Wiltshire. This large geographical area is covered by thirty three autonomous groups. Each group has a Group Representative, secretary and treasurer to organise their own programme of events and to ensure the smooth running of their group. We pay a yearly subscription to our group. This covers a capitation fee as well as hiring costs and some workshop costs.

There are County representatives who bring the views of members back to the Executive Committee of which we are delighted to have Maggie Grey as our President. This committee meets three times a year to oversee and manage the whole organisation taking decisions based on members’ views. It also arranges exhibitions, insurance, advertising, website management, preparing for the annual programme, organises residential courses and produces two Newsletters. The Newsletters are sent out twice a year to members, keeping us up to date with all that is going on within WCE. Residential courses for our members are held in February/March and October/November at The Kingcombe Centre in Toller Porcorum, Nr Dorchester, and at Treloyan Manor in St Ives. All time is given voluntarily although there is some reimbursement for cost of travel and stationery etc.
